’23 Splendour spotlight: King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard

Charlie gives a short but sweet intro to one of Australia’s most hyper-productive and style-shifting rock bands.

I first saw King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard at the Luna Park stage earlier this year; easily one of the best concerts I’ve ever been to. Not only do they perform with insane talent, combining microtonal scales and polyrhythmic percussion, KG&TLW create setlists out of their impressive 24-album lineup that blend together seamlessly. One moment the crowd is chilling out with some psychedelic synth and flute, the next an absolute whirlpool to some absolutely insane guitar solos.

‘Ice V’ (2022) – official music video

After first discovering their 18th album, Butterfly 3000 (2021), I was a little daunted by the absolute mountain of music to explore. Even now, 2 years later (with 6 albums having come out since), I still hit shuffle to find something new to love from their 13 years of music mastery.

So, if you’ve yet to delve into their extensive discography, here are my top 5 tracks to get you started:

1. Rattlesnake

2. Ice V

3. Minimum Brain Size

4. Kepler 22B

5. Catching Smoke

I’ll see you all in the pit on Saturday for SITG 2023!!!!
