USU to give free lunch to rewards members to promote new “Healthy + Affordable” policies
The University of Sydney Union (USU) will give out free “Healthy Lunch Boxes” to ACCESS Rewards members at the monthly USU markets this Wednesday 6th March.
The new lunch boxes are also available for $12 from selected USU venues and include a sandwich or wrap, fresh fruit, a “healthy treat” and a 250ml water or sugar free drink.
The lunch boxes are the flagship item of the USU’s new “Healthy Choices” and “Affordable Options” policies.
The Healthy Choices policy comes with a new labelling system for menus at USU venues, the lunch boxes, and “free fruit Fridays” – where the purchase of a salad comes with a free piece of fruit.
SURG understands the promotion of the program through free lunch boxes at USU events is not limited to this Wednesday’s markets and may return during the year.
The Affordable Options policy comes with an extended review of the “affordable” options available at every USU outlet.
Internal USU documents show the success of “affordable” menu items released in 2018, such as the “$6 after 6pm” program, indicating a clear demand among students for cheaper food. The program began at Abercrombie Terrace and was introduced to Courtyard and Fisher Eats in semester two. The purchase of six “$6 after 6pm meals” also entitles ACCESS rewards members to a seventh free meal.
The plan for 2019 includes $6 pizza all day at Courtyard, an extended $6 evening menu at Abercrombie Terrace, the introduction of “loaded fries” and a $6 evening meal to Carslaw Kitchen, and a $6 Chicken Schnitzel and Chips for Engo Grill.
The policy hints at the USU provided expanded options for breakfast on campus, with Engo Grill and venues in the Holme Building identified as possible locations.
