Six Tunes: To Feel All The Feels To This Mental Health Month
It’s Mental Health Month and since this year’s theme being Tune In, now is the perfect time to get in touch with how you’re feeling.
With the way this year’s unfolded, it’s no surprise that thinking about how we’re feeling can be a little ovwehelming (honestly, it really is at the best of times). That’s why this week’s Six Tunes have been picked to help you feel the feels, from air-pumping beats to songs to have a cry to. We’re covering them all, so brace yourself.
‘See Your Smile’ – Scooter
If you’re looking to get the blood pumping or feel some pure happiness, this tune is for you.
‘See Your Smile’ takes DJ Paul Elstak’s uplifting lyrics and throws them in with a driving combination of pitched kick drums and synth to give the tune its hardstyle vibe. Variations in the layering of sound help add complexity and feeling to the song, while also imparting an upbeat and driving pace that’s characteristic of Scooter’s repertoire.
‘Changing of the Seasons’ – Two Door Cinema Club
Feeling sad is complicated, and ‘Changing of the Seasons’ captures a mixture of melancholy and acceptance that comes from realising you’re no longer in love. Sustained synth chords and soaring guitar melodies come in and out of focus against pumping drums in a way that can only be described as ‘happy sad’.
‘Another Life’ – Motionless in White
We’d be remiss to make a playlist of feelings without including some metal. Instead of bottling up your anger, feel free to let out with this head-banger from Motionless in White. With heavy drums, raspy and screaming vocals, and plenty of electric guitar, ‘Another Life’ incorporates gothic and industrial metal and is a perfect song to shout along to.
‘Cancer’ – Twenty One Pilots
Sometimes all you need is a good cry, and Twenty One Pilots’ cover of ‘Cancer’ is a solid option to get the tears flowing. Their rendition of My Chemical Romance’s original keeps the slow tempo but adds layered vocals, lyric reprises, a general spoken-word vibe, and synth to heighten the mournful and sombre feelings of the original.
‘Big Bad Wolf’ – In This Moment
If you’ve still got a bit more to get off your chest, have a listen to this heavy tune from In This Moment. Along with dark gothic elements, ‘Big Bad Wolf’ features a fusion of abrasive industrial and atmospheric electronic music that sits under low, growling and rasping vocals reminiscent of Marilyn Manson.
‘Hallucinate’ – Dua Lipa
Feeling happy and looking for music to match? Dua Lipa’s ‘Levitate’ has got everything you need to end things on a high note. Its fast pace, funky rhythms, and soulful vocals create its moreish disco-house sound, while elements of electropop, psychedelic, and dance music will help brighten your mood and leave you feeling elevated.
