ICYMI: Verge Festival to be replaced with new ‘pop culture’ event
The USU has decided to replace Verge Festival, citing ‘dwindling attendance’ at the annual arts & culture festival.
The change was approved at the February board meeting, with a job listing for student coordinators to lead the new event being posted soon afterwards.
The USU describes the new festival, named ‘PopFest’, as “a celebration of pop-culture and art. It recognises and encourages creativity and diversity within the University community and creates a welcoming space for self expression.”
It is understood it will draw heavily from existing events such as Comic-Con and Supanova, with elements of cosplay and pop culture panels.
USU President Liliana Tai told SURG:
This year we plan to introduce Popfest as an evolution of Verge Festival. Having noticed the dwindling attendance at Verge Festival, the USU aspires to keep all our festivals relevant and in line with changing cultures. We have consulted with past Verge directors, the Verge gallery and are continuing consultations with student representatives from the SCA.
