SURG to cease broadcasting for 48 hours in support of Staff Strikes
SURG stands with the staff of the University of Sydney in their fight for better working conditions, stronger jobs security and improving learning environments at the University. SURG will not broadcast for 48 hours, during the National Tertiary Education Union (NTEU) strike from the the 11th to 13th of May. It marks the first staff strikes since 2017.
SURG encourages all of it’s members to join the picket line, as we firmly support the staff’s right for greater protections and job security. A university must facilitate the needs of both it’s staff and students to be hubs for learning, research and development; continued casualisation is not sustainable. The administration’s continued ignorance of these detoriating conditions is disgusting and highlights the creeping commercialisation of the university system. The pandemic has made staff and student’s lives uncertain enough without the constant threat of staffing positions and units being slashed.
The University of Sydney Union (USU) and the USyd SRC have also voted to shut down in solidarity with the strikes. Information for students who are interested in attending can be found here.
